As golf is all about consistence and being able to replicate your swing time and time again under all sorts of different conditions, it follows that there is a swing technique that is generally recognized to be the easiest to follow.
That's not to say that you can't be a professional golfer with a swing that goes all over the place. After all, just look at Jim Furyk and of course Jon Daly - you'd never find those swings in a text book manual about golf, yet between them they have been incredibly successful on the professional stage.
However, for the sake of teaching beginners the conventional technique, here are some tips:
1) Keep your left arm straight at all times during the swing, including when you address the ball. Some people may not have the flexibility to keep their left arm straight at the top of the swing so these people should just keep it straight as much as they can. A straight left arm is easy to replicate time and time again.
2) Take the club back outside the line of the ball. This is very hard to discuss without a diagram to show you, but the club path during the initial take away should go outside the line of the ball because on the downswing it drops back on the inside again.
3) Keep that head down and focused on the ball. Although you need to make sure that your head doesn't intrude the path your shoulders will have to make when they rotate.
4) Have a pre-shot routine so that your stance is consistent each time. Slight bend at the knees and arms extended out comfortably. Feet around should width apart - although this can vary for more advanced golfers depending on the club. Grip the club with the over-locking grip.
These four hints are absolutely key for beginners to be shown as soon as they start playing golf. This gets them into the right habit and it is likely their game will develop faster as a result.
