But for the likes of Wild Wild West he's had only hits at the box office (and you can't really call Wild Wild West a flop since I do believe it made its money back). The audiences must love him. In fact they must adore him to the point he becomes bulletproof as far as criticism comes, as seen with the success of his latest movie, Hancock (which I haven't had the pleasure of seeing).
Although to be honest, no critic dared touch Will in their reviews, they only had positive things to say about him. Maybe that's just it, the man is THAT charismatic that no matter what he does, he comes out on top.
And maybe he's just the kind of Hollywood star people love. You know, like the leading men of yore, like Clark Gable, or Cary Grant. People will go to the movies to see him, most of all, not necessarily the movie. Maybe because he's likeable no matter what he plays, because it's a little bit of Will Smith in every role he chooses, and even though he manages to create a character different from his persona, we still get a glimpse of good old Will. And that's enough to bring people to the theatres. Now that's charisma (George Clooney has nothing on this guy).
He's played everything from an L. A. cop to an animated fish, and managed along the way (Ali, The Pursuit of Happiness) to prove he's more than the wise-cracking action figure/comedian one would believe him to be after his early movies. Not to mention he already had a successful TV show and a host of sold records under his belt when he decided Hollywood would be his next endeavour. He's succeeded in about everything he set out to do, and is still at the top of his game.
Dare I say the Chuck Norris facts should actually be about this guy?After all he killed aliens(more than once-Independence Day, Men in Black I and II), murderous robots (I, Robot), sharks (well, almost-Shark Tale), vampires (or something of that kind-I am Legend), was a loving father (The Pursuit of Happiness), managed to bring people together (Hitch), was the most iconic boxer of all time (Ali), and, most recently, developed superpowers (Hancock). As far as anyone can tell he can do no wrong.
And, frankly, I am curious to see what he does next. His two next projects are dramas, one directed by none other than Mr. Spielberg.
